‘Desperate plea’ issued for longtime shelter dog who suffered devastating setback

A dog is in need of some serenity and a comfy place to rest his head after suffering a setback in a Philadelphia shelter. Cider has been a longtime resident at the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and unfortunately, that’s the least of his worries.

“This is a desperate plea for a very special dog,” the shelter said in a April 17 Facebook post.

“Cider has spent the last three and a half years in our shelter. And now, things have taken an even more heartbreaking turn — he has torn his ACL and urgently needs surgery.”

Recovering from ACL surgery, which repairs injuries to the anterior cruciate ligament in the knee, can take months for dogs, Zoetis Pet Care says. “But here’s the problem: Cider cannot recover in the shelter. It’s simply too stressful, too loud, and too overwhelming for the kind of rest and care he needs,” the shelter said. “And for a dog as happy and excited as he is, the hustle and bustle would be too much.” Cider will need a quiet place to recuperate after surgery, so the SPCA is looking for potential foster families. “Yes, it will be a bit more difficult to find — Cider needs to be the only pet in the home. But we know someone, somewhere, is out there for him,” the shelter says.

“This is a last-ditch effort. He’s been strong for so long.”
